An exciting opportunity has arisen to work as a Consultant Psychiatrist with Older People within a Community Mental Health Team. You will be joining a team of 10 Community Consultants, 3 other Inpatient Consultants and a Trust wide Memory Assessment and Rare Dementia Service.

The job involves assessments, management, treatment, of patients mostly over 65 years of age which includes both organic and functional presentations.

The Trust is the second largest city in the UK which has a wide range of cultural, social, sporting and leisure opportunities. They operate out of more than 50 sites and serve a culturally and socially diverse population of 1.2 million spread over 172 square miles.

The hub manages a caseload of approximately 1,700 patients and the team receives an average of 25-30 new referrals each week.

Key role and responsibilities for the Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist role:

  • Manage a caseload of approximately 800 patients.
  • Work is mainly outpatient based with commitment to home and nursing home visits.
  • Provide expert assessments informed by evidence for referred individuals with moderate to severe mental health difficulties and complex needs.
  • In conjunction with the MDT, service user, carer and other involved agencies, develop robust risk assessment and undertake Care Planning.
  • Be the Responsible Clinician and be willing to undertake training to obtain section 12(2) MHA and renew this approval according to agreed procedures. Undertake assessments to include Mental Health Act assessments where appropriate.
  • Contribute to the development of modern Mental Health Services for older people, supporting the Programme Leads in continuing service improvements.
  • Involvement in the teaching of junior doctors and medical students. To take part in the Directorate academic programme. The post-holder may also be asked to participate in the teaching of non-medical staff.

Minimum requirements for the Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist are:

  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCPsych or equivalent Eligible for approval under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act (1983) and Approved Clinician status
  • Obtained inclusion on the Specialist Register; or within six months of the award of a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in General Adult Psychiatry; or eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register
  • Experience of assessing and treating patients with rare dementia's in acute and community psychiatry settings.
  • Experience of providing psychological and/or social interventions.
  • Able to participate in Consultant on call rota.
  • Able to travel.

A relocation expenses may be reimbursed up to £8,000.
